RECOVER has released its 2026 First Aid Guidelines for dogs and cats. These evidence- and consensus-based recommendations help veterinary professionals guide pet owners and caregivers during the critical prehospital emergency period.
Developed through systematic review and expert consensus, the guidelines address urgent conditions where immediate action is crucial. They are not a substitute for professional veterinary diagnosis or treatment. Instead, they provide a framework for recognizing emergencies, offering appropriate initial support, and facilitating timely transport to a veterinary clinic.
Key Conditions and Target Audience
The guidelines offer specific advice for several urgent medical situations. These include heatstroke, choking, burns, noncaustic toxin ingestion, hypoglycemia, and severe extremity bleeding.
The recommendations are intended for a wide range of animal caregivers. Veterinary teams can use them to teach first aid, much like a coach uses fixtures to plan for upcoming challenges. The target audience also includes professional dog handlers, first responders, shelter staff, groomers, boarding facilities, and trainers.
Jamie Burkitt, a guidelines co-chair, emphasized the importance of prehospital care. "Animal emergencies often begin before a patient reaches a veterinary hospital," said Burkitt, a professor at UC Davis. The guidelines aim to give people a practical framework to recognize problems and provide aid, improving overall patient stats for survival and recovery.
Development and Structure
The development process was rigorous. It involved systematic literature searches, evidence synthesis, and assessment of evidence quality. An international commenting period and expert consensus were also part of the process.
The work addressed 16 specific PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) questions. This resulted in 50 distinct treatment recommendations for first aid scenarios.
To aid in teaching and application, the guidelines include First Aid Recognize and Act Algorithms and instructional figures. These visual tools are designed to help veterinary professionals convey complex emergency procedures clearly and effectively to pet owners.
Mission and Availability
Daniel J. Fletcher, president of The RECOVER Initiative, explained the project's goal. "RECOVER exists to empower people to provide lifesaving care to animals through education, science, and community," Fletcher stated. He noted that the guidelines extend this mission beyond the hospital by providing evidence-informed guidance for use when minutes are critical.
